World War One commemorative booklet

Date: Mon 24th February 2014

This year marks 100 years since the start of World War One. To commemorate the war, in which 16 million people were killed, there will be numerous events throughout the country during the next four-and-a-half years.

To commemorate the war years, I have teamed up with the Greenhithe Royal British Legion to produce an educational booklet for school children. We are planning to put together the booklet featuring life in Dartford during the war. It will feature many aspects of the war including what life was like for men who went to fight on the frontline, what life was like for the women and families who stayed at home and what was happening in Dartford between 1914 and 1918.

During the four years of war, Dartford was a centre for munitions factories, it had a principal airfield to defend London at Joyce Green and it was the site of numerous military hospitals.

In the booklet we want to include memories of local people who may know stories of family members in Dartford during WW1 as well as any photos, letters, medals or artefacts.

We really want to create a useful booklet which will bring the wartime years to life.

With this booklet I want to ensure that our younger generations know the sacrifices made by their ancestors to ensure their freedom today.

If you have any WW1 information you would like to share with us, email: gareth.johnson.mp@parliament.uk or phone 020 7219 5532.
